About Richmond Hill City

Richmond Hill is north of Toronto in the York Region. It’s located between Vaughan & Markham. Richmond Hill, Ontario, is located 23 kilometers north of Lake Ontario. It has a population of 202 022 (2021 census) and 195 022 (2016 census). It is one of the nine municipalities that make up the Regional Municipality of York. The city is bordered by Aurora to the north, Whitchurch-Stouffville to the east, Markham to the east and south, Vaughan to the west and south, and King Township to the west.

Richmond Hill was incorporated in 1872 and became a village. It changed to a town in 1957 and subsequently to a city in 2019. In 1971, the Town of Richmond Hill was joined by parts of King, Vaughan, and Whitchurch to form the modern boundaries. The Richmond Hill area has been home to different Indigenous groups throughout history, including the Huron Wendat and Haudenosaunee. Treaty 13 and Williams Treaties cover the land.

Richmond Hill has a rich history and storied past. You might be wondering, “Where is Richmond Hill located?”

The area around Richmond Hill has been home to Indigenous peoples since the end of the last Ice Age. This was approximately 12,000 years ago. According to historical records, the Oak Ridges Moraine was the site of the first Indigenous site. It is believed that it was built between 1280 CE and 1320 CE.

Indigenous Peoples and Treaties

Since the end of the last Ice Age (11,700-12,000 years ago), Indigenous peoples have been living in Richmond Hill. On the east side of Lake Wilcox, the Oak Ridges Moraine is the location of the earliest known Indigenous site in Richmond Hill. It was built between 1280 CE and 1320 CE. It included five longhouses.

The Huron-Wendat were encountered by French explorers who arrived in the area around the 1600s. The territory of this First Nation stretched roughly from Georgian Bay’s shores up to Lake Ontario’s northern shore. A series of epidemics decimated their numbers between 1634 and 1642. The Haudenosaunee defeated the remaining Huron-Wendat in 1648 and 1649. Many people joined the Haudenosaunee.

The Haudenosaunee set up settlements northeast of Lake Ontario in the following years. They began to abandon their colonies in the late 1600s. The Anishinaabeg (including the Mississauga) began to migrate from the region around Lake Superior to the territory that the Haudenosaunee left behind.

Treaty 13 was signed by the colonial administrators in 1805 when Mississauga chiefs met. It is also known as The Toronto Purchase. Treaty 13 transferred 250,800 acres (1.015 km2) from Mississauga to the colonial government. The Mississauga was awarded 10 shillings in return and fishing rights on Etobicoke Creek. Treaty 13 covers much of Richmond Hill. The Williams Treaties, signed in 1923, cover the remaining section of the city’s northeast corner.
